Doom Mapping As Introduction To Level Design

About this event

Doom 1 and 2 are genre defining video games that propelled the first person shooter, first person role playing and multiplayer games into mainstream light. Id's optimization allowed the game to be played on a larger number of computers than other first person experiences at the time. The tools to build levels were open sourced and hundreds, if not thousands of custom maps and games were made using the Doom 2 engine as the heart. As computers advanced, the old game bit rotted and wasn't able to be played on modern hardware. New open source projects like BOOM, Chocolate Doom and UZDoom took up the mantle to continue the game's legacy through modern source porting. In this talk, Patrick Phillips will cover why making maps and modifications for Doom is still relevant and a great way to learn game design.
