We want freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of choice, freedom from oppression, and the freedom to determine the direction of our own lives. But what exactly do we mean when we say that we want to be free? Is freedom simply the ability to do what we want without interference? Or could our own desires sometimes make us less free? Are rules and limitations necessarily enemies of freedom—or can the right limitations actually make freedom possible? At this Coffee & Conversations Meetup, we'll step behind political debates about freedom and explore a deeper philosophical question: What does it actually mean for a human being to be free? Together, we'll discuss questions like: Is freedom simply the ability to choose? Does being free mean being able to do whatever we want? Can our own desires, habits, or addictions make us unfree? Is someone free if they can choose anything but cannot control themselves? Are rules and restrictions necessarily opposed to freedom? Can accepting certain limits actually increase our freedom? Is freedom primarily freedom from outside interference—or freedom for something greater? Should society ever restrict someone's freedom for that person's own good? Where should my freedom end when my choices affect other people? Are there some choices that no society should permit? Does freedom require responsibility? Can we be truly free without knowing what is good? Does human nature place boundaries around what genuine freedom looks like? Are we born free—or do we have to learn how to become free? And ultimately, what is freedom for?
