About this event
Join us for the second annual DC Ladino Day, a celebration of Sephardic language and culture through stories, music, and food. Ladino, also known as Judeo-Spanish, is a uniquely Jewish language rooted in old Castilian Spanish and infused with Hebrew, Turkish, Arabic, French, and other languages. A bridge between cultures and a window into the Sephardic world, Ladino was the mother tongue of Sephardic Jews in the Ottoman Empire for 500 years and has a long and storied history in the United States, including in DC. Gather with us as we explore the rich language, history, and culture of the Sephardic world. The day will feature an exploration of the Ladino language with Ladinolinguist Dr. Bryan Kirschen of SUNY Binghamton, an interactive panel discussion on Sephardic Jews in the nation’s service, and a celebratory Ladino musical performance. The day will close with a delicious reception featuring a selection of Sephardic treats (kosher options available). Register early and save! Early bird pricing is $18/person through October 16; ticket prices will then increase to $36/person. If you have any questions, please reach out to Sonya at sweisburd@edcjcc.org. This event is brought to you in partnership with the Sephardic Jewish Brotherhood of America.
