About this event
Offsite - See Program Description. A monthly lecture series to bring learning out of the library and into the community! Each month we'll be joined by a community expert, educator or academic to share their knowledge, inspire conversation and interesting questions. Programs may explore local history, science, culture and the arts. There are no classrooms, exams or required notes just an opportunity to learn something new, meet your neighbors and enjoy. Join us at Moderation Brewing in the old Fire Station on Thursday September 24th at 6P.M. as we hear from Local Author Jane Brox discuss her research on The Homestead Act of 1862 gave independent women their first opportunity to own property, and in the decades that followed, over 200,000 single women staked claims in the American West. Until then, single women’s choices of home had largely been limited to boarding houses, charity homes, or a spare room in the homes of their parents or siblings, which made the opportunity for full ownership all the more meaningful to them. For the first time, they were able to have a say over how and where they lived. Many embraced the freedom, responsibility, and community they discovered in staking a claim, and it changed their lives. Moderation Brewing does not have food available on site but may partner with local food trucks for attendees to purchase. Alcoholic beverages are sold by Moderation Brewing only to Individuals age 21 . Moderation Brewing is located at 21 Town Hall St, Brunswick.
