About this event

You’ve heard these sounds on the screen. Now experience them just feet away. RDA Performs’ second season opens with Crouching Tiger & Beyond: Cinematic Soundscapes, an intimate journey through cinematic color, cultural heritage, and extraordinary instruments. Hong Wang, whose traditional Chinese instruments have helped shape the sound of major film, television, game, and concert productions—including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, and Avatar: The Last Airbender—joins Artistic Director Alexandria Le at the piano for an evening where ancient traditions meet contemporary storytelling. A virtuoso performer and musical archaeologist, Hong plays dozens of rare woodwind and string instruments—earning praise from composers Benjamin Wynn and Jeremy Zuckerman as a “folk music dictionary.” His expertise extends beyond the stage: Hong has sought out, studied, and preserved remarkable instruments throughout his career and has helped curate instruments for museum collections, including the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix. VIP Ticket and Season Pass holders are invited to an exclusive pre-concert encounter with Hong, featuring an intimate demonstration of select instruments from his personal collection and the fascinating stories behind their distinctive sounds.
