About this event

Space is limited and registration is required. Writers create worlds. It might be a small town. A bustling city. A raft, as in Huck Finn. Science fiction and fantasy are the realm of new universes, worlds born out of the writer’s imagination. Harry Potter lives in a world in which people fly. Gollum and Bilbo reside in Middle Earth. In Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, mattresses are dull-witted, animate objects. In One Hundred Years of Solitude, it rains rose petals. What kind of world would you create? What effect does the place you create have on the characters and the plot? Learn to create worlds that, though imaginary, affect the plot and characters. All writing levels welcome. About the Presenter: Bob Balmer’s writing has appeared in the Smithsonian, Golf Illustrated, ZYZZYVA, the Oregonian, the Seattle Times, Oregon Coast Magazine, and other print media. It has aired on Marketplace, the Savvy Traveler and Oregon Public Broadcasting and Television. He has facilitated workshops for the Deschutes Public Library, Thurber House, Fishtrap, Writing in the West, Write on the Sound, the Palm Springs Writers Guild, and other writing organizations in the Pacific Northwest.
