Conservation at Black River Cypress Preserve

**Thursday, October 1, 7 pm (Doors open at 6:45 for socializing)** **Sierra Club presents: Conservation at Black River Cypress Preserve** **Sarah Wilson, Visitation and Education Manager** College of Charleston Rita Hollings Science Center Auditorium, 58 Coming Street (corner of George) Free and open to the public. The Black River rises in the swamps and bogs of Sumter and Lee counties and flows through Clarendon and Williamsburg counties until it reaches the Great Pee Dee River in Georgetown County. The privately owned Black River Cypress Preserve was created to inspire, activate, and educate citizens about the extraordinary blackwater swamps and native pinelands of the South Carolina coastal plain. Founded in 2015, the Preserve features fifteen miles of interpretive walking and biking trails. In addition to a 3.2-mile kayak route down the main stem of the river, there are seven miles of paddling trails within the cypress swamp, on the Swampside Tract and across the river on property owned by The Nature Conservancy. Sarah Wilson is a retired educator who loves her part-time retirement job. She enjoys educating others about the connections of the natural world and the role humans play in taking care of mother Earth.
