Confluence: Public Art, Experimentation, and Engaged Communities | Janet Echelman and Ann Hamilton

Join artists Janet Echelman and Ann Hamilton for a conversation about site specificity, immersive public art, and the role of landscape, infrastructure, and community in their practices. Together, they will discuss Echelman’s large-scale environmental installations, including Current (2023), and the ways artists can engage with the places and communities in which their work is situated. Earthquakes, tsunamis, subways, and city infrastructure are central to Echelman’s practice. Drawing on landscapes, geographies, climate impacts, and communities, she creates sculptural installations that transform public spaces. Informed by the geography of Columbus’s waterfront and city grid, Current cascades more than 220 feet along Gay Street. Echelman will be in dialogue with Ann Hamilton, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art at The Ohio State University and a Distinguished Professor in the department for a decade. Like Echelman, Hamilton’s practice explores the relationship between art, place, community, and scale. This program is free with registration.
