Community Workshop: There's No Better Time Than Now — Composing The Everyday Photograph

Cary-McPheeters Gallery. Every photograph in an archive begins as an ordinary, everyday moment that someone decided was worth keeping. There's No Better Time Than Now: Composing The Everyday Photograph invites community members to explore the intimate relationship between trust, documentation, and place. Facilitated by photographer and co-curator John Stephens (@jas_photo), this hands-on workshop bridges gallery reflection with active street photography across Atlanta’s historic Sweet Auburn corridor. The program begins inside the gallery, where participants will examine key images to uncover the visual language existing beyond the frame. Stephens will guide attendees in identifying the subtle markers of trust, familiarity, and kinship that distinguish deeply authentic, relationship-based candid photographs from formal, posed portraits. Following the gallery walkthrough, participants will embark on a historic photo walk along Auburn Avenue, stopping at landmark cultural institutions including the APEX Museum, the Atlanta Daily World building, and the Municipal Market (Sweet Auburn Curb Market). Working in pairs with cameras or smartphones, participants will practice translating intentional observation into authentic visual storytelling, documenting everyday community moments in real time.
