The Library’s Civics 101 series seeks to explore lesser known political histories and perspectives and shine a light on local issues impacting our community. This year, we're highlighting stories of civics that go beyond the ballot: all the activism, organizing, protest, research, and community building that go on behind the scenes to make change happen. Join us for The Red Power Movement: History and Legacy, a presentation by Jimmy Lee Beason II, a citizen of the Osage Nation and professor in the Indigenous and American Indian Studies department at Haskell Indian Nations University. The Red Power movement was a social justice movement led primarily by young Native activists during the civil rights era who demanded self-determination in order to liberate themselves from the paternalistic and genocidal policies of the United States.
