Join award-winning poet and Emmanuel College professor Dr. Monique-Adelle Callahan D. for a free poetry writing workshop. You'll read inspiring poems, respond to engaging writing prompts, and explore how poetry can help us notice the world more deeply. The purpose is learning not only to appreciate poems but to also understand how they invite us to feel, imagine, and see the world in new ways. Each week we’ll explore a different theme, such as: Home & the City Family & Friendship Nature & the Environment Love & Relationships Spirituality & Faith This workshop is open to all experienced levels — from beginners to seasoned poets, this welcoming workshop offers a space to slow down, reflect, and discover the power of your own voice through poetry. The series will conclude with a final poetry reading at Emmanuel College! More about Dr. Monique-Adelle Callahan My graduate work focused on the transnational exchange of ideas about freedom among poets, three women in particular. This work took me through a series of explorations of Cuba, Brazil and the United States during the second half of the 19th century. I was especially curious about how poetic language—that is, metaphor—allows people to reimagine space, place, history, and self. My current poetry project explores the experience of pregnant enslaved women in the Americas during the 19th and early 20th centuries. This project also explores how imperial, colonial and slave holding forces influenced the evolution of generations, as well as the role of the body in negotiating the liminality between life and death in the context of slave births.
