About this event

Kick off Christ College – The Honors College’s Symposium Speaker Series with the Annual Christ College Dean’s Address with Dean and Professor of Humanities and East Asian Studies Jennifer Prough ’91, Ph.D. Who Cares? What would it mean to make care the central ethic in our lives? To kick off this year, Dean Prough will ask us to take care seriously. Together, we will begin to explore what it might mean to place care as the central ethic of our lives. Care is multifaceted and underrated; it can feel thin in the face of love and hate, and yet, to “take care” requires that we give our attention to someone or something and that is not always easy. Like baking with yeast, embracing care as an ethic requires patience and practice. It is less like a precise recipe, and more like a way of leavening ourselves for full human flourishing. This talk will explore what it means to care for ourselves, others, and the world in a time of distraction and disconnection. Indeed, centering the ethic of care in our lives might help us better navigate the uncertainty, suffering, surprises, and great joys of this life. Join us for the start of a conversation about what it might mean to care — fully.
