Chip Carved Box with Charlene Lynum (In-Person)

The project will be a box made from basswood with black walnut trim. Measuring 5.5 inches square and 3 inches tall, this box is the perfect size to showcase your carving. You’ll have the option to choose from six different patterns—ranging from beginner-friendly to more advanced designs—so you can work at your own comfort level. Each pattern will highlight the natural beauty of the box and enhance its eye-catching black walnut accents. The finished piece makes a wonderful keepsake or a thoughtful gift for birthdays, weddings, or any special occasion. Some of the topics covered: · Carving safety and proper tool handling · How to apply and follow patterns · Techniques for three-sided chips, lines, and curves · Carving larger chips without chip-outs · How to fix mistakes · Finishing techniques Vesterheim offers a 60% discount for in-person class tuition on a space-available standby basis to any resident living within 50 miles of Vesterheim. Students will be notified about the availability of an opening in the class 21 days before the starting date of the class period. Discounts do not include materials fees. If local area residents want a guaranteed place in a class, they must pay regular class tuition. Charlene Lynum started chip carving around 1985. She enjoys how a simple object can be chip-carved and transformed into something beautiful and elegant. She believes that chip carving is more than a craft, it is an art. Charlene has published a book through Fox Chapel Publishing titledChip Carving Starter Guide. She is a regular contributor toWoodcarving Illustrated. In 2022 she became a Gold Medalist in woodworking at Vesterheim.
