Build Skills and Confidence with Chess for Kids Learn, play, and grow your skills in Chess for Kids at Gorton! Whether your child is new to chess or ready for a greater challenge, this class makes learning the game fun and engaging. Professional chess coach Evan Spiegel guides students step by step. He breaks down complex concepts into clear, approachable lessons. Students build strong chess fundamentals while learning strategies they can use in every game. Through instruction and hands-on play, kids learn to recognize patterns, plan ahead, and make thoughtful decisions. They’ll practice strategies, solve problems, and put their new skills to work against other players. Chess also gives kids a fun way to strengthen focus, patience, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Each game offers a new challenge and another opportunity to learn. Players can progress at their own pace in a welcoming and supportive environment. Beginners can build a strong foundation, while more experienced players can sharpen their strategies and competitive skills. Ages 7ish-11ish Meet the Instructor Hello! My name is Evan Spiegel. I am a professional chess coach. I have been coaching the Niles North High School chess team for the past year, and they just brought home two big trophies and a plaque from the National championship! I also offer private lessons, both online and in person. Earlier in my career I was a programmer working on top-selling virtual reality apps and games. I’ve had a passion for chess ever since I was a freshman in high school, as part of the state championship Niles North chess team.
