We meet up every other week to discuss our FIRE journey, budgeting, debt payoff, and investment strategies. I work in IT, I'm not a finance person trying to sell you anything. FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It is a lifestyle movement with the goal of gaining financial freedom and the option to leave the traditional workforce decades before the standard retirement age. The core philosophy of FIRE is that by aggressively optimizing your savings and investments, you can buy back your time. How It Works The strategy generally relies on three pillars: 1. Extreme Savings: While traditional financial advice recommends saving 10% to 15% of your income, FIRE practitioners often aim to save 50% to 75%. This is achieved through strict budgeting, frugal living, and intentionally avoiding lifestyle inflation as income grows. 1. Aggressive Investing: Those savings are typically invested in low-cost, broad-market index funds to maximize compound interest over time. 1. The 25x Rule & The 4% Rule: The mathematical foundation of FIRE dictates that you reach financial independence when your investment portfolio is 25 times your annual expenses. Once you hit that number, the "4% Rule" suggests you can safely withdraw 4% of your portfolio each year (adjusted for inflation) without running out of money. Example: If you need $40,000 a year to live, your FIRE number is $1,000,000. Variations of FIRE As the movement has grown, it has splintered into different approaches based on lifestyle goals: Lean FIRE: Retiring with a highly minimalist lifestyle. Practitioners keep their expenses incredibly low to reach their FIRE number as fast as possible, often needing less than $40,000 a year in retirement. Fat FIRE: Retiring with a luxurious lifestyle.
