Ceramics: “Face Mugs”

Deadline to Register: October 10th at 5:00pm Title: Ceramics: “Face Mugs” Description: As a traditional pottery form, face jugs have a long history, from pre-Columbian America, ancient Greece, and medieval Europe, as well as Africa. The distinctive face jugs of the American south originated in the early 1800s, developed from African art forms, and served multiple purposes from practical (carrying water or other liquids) to spiritual (serving as grave markers) to self-identification. In this class, you will carry on this tradition by creating your own distinctive face vessel using pre-made wheel-thrown mug forms. No prior experience is needed in working with clay. We will have a glazing session on Sunday October 25th. (If you are unable to attend the glazing session, your instructor can apply the glaze of your choosing.) Instructor: Paul Wieland has been making wheel-thrown pottery for over 15 years and has taught at multiple pottery studios throughout the region. He studied ceramics under Tom Marsh at the University of Louisville and was a co-founder of the Tennessee Valley Ceramic Arts Guild (TVCAG). He has demonstrated pottery-making at the Burritt Museum Folklife Festival for several years. He has also exhibited his work at Lowe Mill in Huntsville and in Atlanta, GA.
