Cave Creek - Pecos Wilderness at Albertson's Parking Lot - St Francis and Zia in Santa Fe, NM on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
## Details Please join us for a magic day in the heart of the Pacos Wilderness. This moderately easy, 4.8-mile hike will take us to a place where Cave Creek runs into the mountain, only to reaper a 1/4-Mile down stream. The total elevation gain is 580 ft. The altitude at the trail head is 8342 ft, and the altitude at the cave is 8,926ft. The drive distance is 50-miles each way, so plan to offer your driver five dollars for gas. We will meet at the north end of Albertson's Parking, facing Zia road, at 8:00 am. Bring Flashlight, poles, hat, Raincoat, sunscreen, plenty of water and lunch. Dogs on leash are welcome My first hike to this cave was in 1942, when I was 7 years old, and I've been back many times. AllTrails says, "The beginning of the trail is mostly a gradual uphill. The trail crosses the creek twice and has some muddy spots, so it is recommended to wear waterproof shoes. The caves are hard to find, but around three-fourths of the way in, an open area on the left side of the trail leads to the river and the caves are on the other side. If driving to the campground to start the hike, a $2.00 use fee is required, and a hang tag must be put on the windshield. Bathrooms are available at the trailhead".
