About this event

Join us at Harold Washington Library to celebrate Queer History Month with a movement workshop designed to strengthen your mind-body connection. Photo Credit: Lawrence Powell Jr. CathARTic Edutainment is an interactive lecture-demonstration, created and led by Brandon Avery, on how to create movement compositions (and eventually choreographic works) thematically based on visceral personal experiences. In this workshop you will observe and explore how movement is a powerful tool for expressing identity. You will gain incredibly useful tools for navigating your emotions when reviewing or reliving strong sensations, and should you choose to, you will have resources to transform those experiences into safely performable and shareable artwork. This event is welcoming to folks of all ages and identities. Photo Credit: Manny Rodríguez About the Instructor: Brandon Avery is a distinguished dancer and choreographer with extensive performance and teaching experience. He is currently a company member with Hiplet ballerinas and Chicago's Joel Hall Dancers, and is the founder and instructor of Hips & Heels by Brandon Avery™. Avery made Chicago history in 2023 as the first male heels dancer to perform at the Bud Billiken Day Parade. His passion for dance is infectious, and as an instructor, he seeks to empower his students and build a welcoming and diverse dance community.
