Carbon Leaf Carbon Leaf returns with Time Is the Playground, their fifteenth studio album — a work that blends reflective storytelling with the band’s signature mix of folk textures, indie-rock edge, and melodic warmth. The Richmond, Virginia group leans into themes of time, memory, and growth, weaving acoustic and electric elements into a 12-track album meant to be experienced start to finish, almost like chapters in a single narrative. Frontman Barry Privett has described the project as a deliberate challenge to create a cohesive album in an era of fragmented listening. Formed in 1992 as a college cover band, Carbon Leaf has since played more than 3,500 shows and carved out a unique place in American indie music. Their breakthrough came with “The Boxer,” which won the 2002 AMAs New Music Award and marked the first time an unsigned band performed live on the broadcast. With that single entering radio rotation, their national tours expanded and the band began a long run of songwriting acclaim and energetic, communal live performances. After several successful releases with Vanguard Records, the band made the intentional shift back to full independence.
