Blues & Taboos shines a light on the blues and jazz that filled America’s speakeasies, dance halls, and late-night clubs during Prohibition. These are the songs people danced to while liquor was illegal and jazz was still finding its voice: clever, playful, sometimes provocative and risqué, and always entertaining. From the smoky clubs of the 1920s to the early days of swing, the program revisits a side of the American Songbook that’s rarely heard today and offers a fresh look at the music that helped shape American jazz.
