Birding the Neighborhoods: Mt. Talbert at Mt Talbert in Portland, OR on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
Join the Bird Alliance for a loop around the mighty Mt. Talbert! Talbert is an extinct cinder cone between I-205 and Happy Valley, part of the Boring Lava Field that stopped erupting 60,000 years ago and which includes the better-known Mt. Tabor. Talbert is a lovely forest ramble. It’s a good spot for warblers like Wilson’s (the bird in the photo) and Black-throated Gray. Other breeding songbirds like Warbling, Hutton’s and even Cassin’s Vireos may be seen, as well as two of the confusing empid flycatchers, Willow and Western. Join us for a walk through this 200-acre, little-known mini-mountain on the edge of the city! Everyone is welcome, please come even if you don’t have binoculars, we’ve a pair to share. Walking distance: 2\. 5 miles Elevation changes: 600 foot gain, moderate difficulty Trail: dirt path Pacing: slow Rest stops: no benches on trail but we will often stop Sun exposure: walk will be mostly shady Amenities: bathrooms at Mather road parking lot Parking: at Mather road trailhead
