About this event
Looking for a fun and meaningful way to be creative? The crowdsourced environmental art project, Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene, is coming to the branch! With the aim of raising awareness about bird-building collisions, the project invites the public to participate in the production of a 300-foot-long carpet of 10,836 bird replicas – one for each bird killed and collected in Chicago in 2023. Using upcycled donated cloth, scissors and glue, participants are assigned a specific bird that died from a window collision and are tasked with creating its replica. The completed bird is then tagged with the creator’s name, hometown and date made, as well as the details of the bird it depicts. A searchable database allows participants to locate their bird in the finished carpet. Bird replicas will not be taken home after the workshop but collected to become part of the larger installation. Expect to spend 20-40 minutes crafting a bird. No supplies necessary, everything will be provided. For adults, teens and kids 5 and up.
