Belgian Binding

About this event

Once a mysterious secret, this non-adhesive binding style has become very popular with artists and writers as it opens flat, making it a great book for writing and sketching. The cover boards and the spine are covered as three separate pieces, and then a single waxed linen thread is used to weave them into a single cover—with the pages added in during the last step! Feel free to bring your own apron, and decorative papers for the cover if you like, but you don’t need to bring anything! All materials and tools will be provided. Level: Intermediate—Introduction to Bookmaking or similar experience with bookmaking basics (6 hrs) is required. Registration closes December 9, 2026 and all materials are provided. Samples by Linda Rollins WORKSHOP SUPPLIES: Registration includes a $15 materials fee to cover all of the necessary supplies provided in class, as well as access to any needed tools. In addition, you may want to bring the following optional items for class: (optional) Personal apron (we’ll have extras handy) and/or wear clothes that can get a little messy (optional) Any decorative papers you’d like to consider using on the book (optional) A notebook or sketchbook to take notes MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Book artist Linda Rollins is passionate about all aspects of the book arts and enjoys sharing her extensive knowledge of binding and repair techniques to students of all levels. She has been a book conservator since the mid-1990s, and was proprietor of Capella Book Arts.
