BASIC is what happens when three fearless musical explorers strip everything down to rhythm, texture, and instinct. Guitarist Chris Forsyth, drummer and electronic percussionist Mikel Patrick Avery, and bassist/guitarist Douglas McCombs draw from art rock, trance, jazz, dub, psychedelia, and global rhythms to create immersive instrumental music that is hypnotic, groove-driven, and constantly evolving. As Pitchfork recently observed, the trio has established “a hypnotic, groove-rooted identity all its own,” capturing the essence of a band that’s impossible to pin to a single genre. Fresh off the release of their acclaimed new album Basic, recorded largely live at Chicago’s legendary Electrical Audio, the trio arrives at De la Luz with the chemistry forged through years of touring and improvising together. Every performance becomes a conversation between rhythm, melody, and atmosphere, unfolding in real time as shimmering guitars, dubbed-out bass, acoustic percussion, and electronic textures collide. Whether you’re a fan of Tortoise, adventurous jazz, psychedelic rock, or simply music that rewards deep listening, BASIC offers a rare live experience that is both cerebral and deeply physical.
