## **Babbitt — Sinclair Lewis** ***Babbitt*** (1922) is a satirical novel that follows George F. Babbitt, a prosperous real estate broker in the fictional Midwestern city of Zenith, whose life embodies the complacency and conformity of the American middle class in the 1920s. Proud of his business success and social standing, Babbitt initially embraces the values of boosterism, materialism, and civic orthodoxy, but he undergoes a brief, uneasy rebellion against these norms—experimenting with liberal ideas and personal freedom—before retreating back into conventional life. The novel offers a sharp critique of consumer culture, social pressure, and the loss of individuality in modern America. *Babbitt* played a significant role in establishing Lewis’s reputation and contributed to his being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930, the first such honor given to an American novelist.
