Author Event: Pao Lor, Bamboo Son

Drawing from his lived experience (Memoirs: Modern Jungles and Bamboo Son), Dr. Pao Lor offers insight into the Hmong people’s journey from a complex, resilient, and often vulnerable culture in the remote regions of Laos during the 1960s and 1970s to becoming an integral part of American society and the global landscape. He examines five pillars of the Hmong American experience: an ancient culture, American allies, refugees, American neighbors and citizens, and the transformation of an ancient culture. Dr. Lor also explores their cultural evolution through four key markers of the rise of a civilization: village life, town life, city life, and mega-city life. Throughout the presentation, participants are invited to engage in dialogue and ask questions, situating the Hmong experience within broader contemporary challenges such as immigration, forced migration, diversity, globalization, refugees, displaced peoples, and related issues. Lor is also the author of Modern Jungles: A Hmong Refugee’s Childhood Story of Survival, published by the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. He enjoys spending time with family, playing soccer, doing house chores, biking, motorcycling, and relaxing. He currently resides with his family and their two cats in Kimberly, Wisconsin.
