Atmospheric Soda Firing with Kay Yourist

Soda firing is a process whereby soda is introduced into a very hot kiln. The soda vaporizes and interacts with the surfaces of the pots in the kiln, becoming flashes of color and sheen in interesting and unpredictable ways. Some refer to this process as 'painting with fire'. In this class, students will explore multiple surface treatment techniques to prepare their works for a trip through the soda firing kiln. We will then study our results and prepare more of our pots for a second firing. Soda firing requires a dedicated kiln that is used only for soda firings. With this in mind, know that you will be traveling to the kiln location in Ann Arbor 4 times [classes], twice to load and twice to unload. Together, we will prep the kiln, load our pots, join in the firing process, and later unload our completed treasures inside. This 10-week class includes time for making work on the wheel or the table. And a minimum of two soda firings. This class is only available to students with an intermediate to advanced skill level.
