About this event
Please be aware that the RSVPs to this event may appear low, but there are always lots of folks in attendance that don't use this website to RSVP! Fate & Karma is the topic of this month's Atheists, Humanists, and Agnostics gathering. Within their religious conceptions, fate and karma are similar in being part of the fabric of the universe. Fate was important in the religions of the ancient Greeks and the Norse, among others, while karma is central to Hinduism and Buddhism. Both fate and karma also have different and looser meanings in the modern West. How should atheists, humanists, and agnostics think about fate and karma? Does one or both capture something real about how the world works? Within their possible meanings, are they useful in a poetic or metaphorical sense? Or are fate and karma examples of concepts that a rational person must leave behind? To prepare for the discussion, participants can read here for a short introduction to fate and here for karma within Hinduism. Mark Smith, UW Professor (Political Science, Comparative Religion, Communication) and a member of Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church, will lead the conversation. W This event is free and open to all. For more information, contact darrell.udd@gmail.com
