About this event
Nearly two dozen printmakers in and around Asheville are paying tribute to their individual and collective resilience through ‘Pressing Onwards,’ a group exhibition at Mars Landing Arts Center. The work on view reflects the repair, hope, and growth artists have personally experienced, whether referencing Hurricane Helene or inspirations from any personal experienced loss or sense of devastation. In a group statement, artists in this exhibition said “As printmakers, we often persevere and press on through ink, layering, mark-making, carving, and the pressure of the press. Personal and collective narratives stand witness and tell a story of place and time. The struggle is not the end of the story, but an unexpected space where beauty can take root, mirroring life around us. Pressing onward— defiantly so.” Participating artists are Angela Modzelewski, Anne Bessac, Beatriz Coll, Beth Cefalu, Bobbi Allen, Brad Clement, Carol Lawrence, Christina Whiteman, David Humphreys, Denise Markbreit, Gwen Diehn, Jean McLaughlin, Jenny Wilker, L. June Eames, Laura Ladendorf, Lucinda Shelton, Lynn Allison, Starun Maria Epes, Martha Ensign Johnson, Martha Oatway, Steve West and Susana Abell. The exhibition will also include entries from Turning the Page on Helene, a community-based therapeutic art project tapping into the transformative power of altered books to tell our stories from the storm through the visual arts. Join us for the Exhibition Reception: Friday, October 9 from 5-8pm Live Music by Jason Hite from 5J Barrow Lite bites and beverages will be served.
