About this event

Join us for a special evening exploring two remarkable exhibitions. Curator Donna Stein will introduce L’Estampe originale , the 1890s French print portfolio that brought together an extraordinary generation of artists and helped redefine the possibilities of original printmaking. Following this presentation, Henry Korn, former CEO of Guild Hall, will take audiences behind the scenes of one of America’s pioneering community cultural institutions. Through stories from Guild Hall’s history and its remarkable collection, Korn will explore the artists and cultural community that made East Hampton an influential center for American art. What to expect: Part I: The Graphic Arts Publisher Who Redefined Originality in the 1890s Independent curator Donna Stein will introduce you to L’Estampe originale , a rare graphics portfolio published in France during the mid 1890s that is widely regarded as one of the greatest collaborations in the history of printmaking. The dynamic and eclectic portfolio is a remarkable tribute to printmaking, especially lithography, as an original and experimental medium for a path-breaking generation of revolutionary artists ranging from Puvis de Chavannes to Whistler to Toulouse-Lautrec. With 95 prints by 74 artists L’Estampe originale presented nearly every stylistic movement during the second half of the nineteenth century from Impressionism to the fin-de siècle Art Nouveau. Part II: Inside Guild Hall East Hampton, founded in 1648, is the oldest English settlement in New York. The world knows East Hampton Village as a summer sandbox for the rich and famous. Less known is its long history as a colony for some of the most inventive visual, performing, and literary artists in America. The art and objects drawn from the permanent collection of Guild Hall of East Hampton showcases renown Eastern Long Island artists in residence, including Thomas Moran, Jackson Pollock, and Andy Warhol. Henry James Korn, Guild Hall’s former chief executive officer and an author, will take visitors behind the scenes at Guild Hall. His store of lore represents an opportunity for participants to enhance their understanding of the “site-specific” nature of a pioneering community cultural center that qualifies as a national cultural treasure. Please note: Your evening admission includes both presentations.
