Armed Forces Day Celebration

Nicknamed America’s Patriotic Home, Hawthorne houses the world’s largest ammunition depot. The town’s patriotism is always on display, but the main event is the annual Armed Forces Day celebration. Held the third weekend in May for more than 70 years, this multi-day event draws thousands for parades, carnival games, tournaments, and more. With thousands of artillery storage bunkers and a one-of-a-kind munitions museum, Hawthorne gives Armed Forces Day a full 21-gun salute. Nevada’s largest patriotic celebration draws thousands, culminating in a star-spangled parade and ceremony honoring the U.S. military. The weekend kicks off with a parade featuring decorated entries of all kinds, from quads and golf carts to scooters and pedestrians, all decked out in patriotic flair. Sample classic American fare at dozens of local food vendors, including tacos, ice cream, burgers, and donuts, while kids take on carnival games, splash areas, and bounce houses. Friday night ends with fireworks lighting up the sky. The parade is the weekend’s highlight, beginning with a military flyover before moving through downtown Hawthorne: Keep an eye out for Cecil the Sea Serpent, a local favorite. A car show, food vendors, live music, and various tournaments—including horseshoe, cornhole, arm wrestling, pong, and quarters—add to the fun all weekend long.
