About this event

Celebrate Archaeology Day at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center. This family-oriented event will take place on Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants can learn about artifact sorting, atlatl throwing, and archaeological flotation demonstrations. The flotation demonstrations will use simple equipment to show how archaeologists extract plant material and other items from the soil. An atlatl is an ancient dart-throwing tool that was used for thousands of years in North America until it was replaced by the bow and arrow. Atlatl throwing will take place at 11 a.m. The floatation demonstration will be at 1 p.m. Free refreshments will be served. The cost of the event is included with admission. For more information, call (918) 962-2062. The center is located three miles east of Spiro on Highway 9/271 and four miles north on Lock and Dam Road.
