Sarah Towle, award-winning author of Crossing the Line: Finding America in the Borderlands, returns to the Elting Library, a guest of Amnesty International Mid-Hudson, to continue the conversation we started last year. Sarah unmasks our dysfunctional immigration system beyond slogans. She explains with unique clarity how Donald Trump transformed its “brokenness” into a weapon to drive democracy into crisis. She unveils how Department of Homeland Security agencies came to be paramilitary armies patrolling US streets. And she compels us not only to get to the polls this November, but to join a new initiative, launched in collaboration with Diana Zuckerman and John Fricker in August 2026, to create a nationwide campaign to divest from the detention-to-deportation pipeline that is failing everyone, “[except for] the demagogues and profiteers who benefit from it,” and which is hiding in many of our pension plans and retirement portfolios.
