"50 Tons of Fighting Fury". That is how the PT (Patrol Torpedo) crews referred to their fast, nimble, heavily armed wooden boats. Powered by three V-12 marine engines, and carrying 3,000 gallons of highly flammable aviation gasoline, these courageous crews pressed their attacks to much closer distances than conventional warships, eventually closing the gap to as little as 60 feet...the distance between the pitcher's mound and home plate on a baseball diamond.
