About this event

A Behind-the-Scenes Perspective of the Six-Part AMC Story Author and producer Joe Ligo’s 2025 PBS documentary series, The Last Independent Automaker, recently received the Society of Automotive Historians’ E. P. Ingersoll Award for Excellence in the Presentation of Automotive History. Now Joe brings the story behind the six-part series detailing the rise and fall of the American Motors Corporation (AMC) to the AACA Museum, Inc. for a live on-site and online presentation. Join us at the Museum on Thursday, October 8th, at 7:00 p.m. American Motors Corporation (AMC) was formed in 1954 by merging Nash-Kelvinator and the Hudson Motor Car Company to compete with Detroit’s Big Three automakers. Under George Romney, AMC focused on producing compact, fuel-efficient cars like the Rambler. Known for innovation despite limited resources, AMC introduced niche vehicles, muscle cars such as the Javelin and AMX, and pioneered four-wheel-drive passenger cars like the AMC Eagle. Financial difficulties, regulatory challenges, and a sequence of partnerships and buyouts—ultimately involving Renault and Chrysler—led to AMC’s end. The Last Independent Automaker covers the rise and fall of American Motors Corporation, a car company that employed hundreds of thousands of people and built millions of vehicles from 1954 to 1987. The presentation focuses on how the series was made. Museum on-site participation: Suggested $10 donation at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Online participation is FREE: The link will be sent to registered guests and will be available on this page on Thursday, October 8th.
