All Fairfax Reads: A County-Wide Read of Demon Copperhead! Fairfax County Public Library is hosting events and a county-wide read of Barbara Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead as part of our annual series: All Fairfax Reads. Cosponsored by Fairfax Library Foundation. Discuss Demon Copperhead Join us and George Mason University Professor Anthony Dyer Hoefer for a discussion of our county-wide read: Barbara Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead. Published in 2022, Demon Copperhead tells the story of a boy born in Appalachian Virginia as he comes of age and experiences hardships of rural institutional poverty. A modern retelling of Charles Dickens' David Copperfield, the novel was an instant bestseller and earned numerous accolades, including the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and a spot on the New York Times list of the 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. About the Presenter Anthony Dyer Hoefer is Associate Professor of English and Associate Dean for Student Engagement, Admissions, and Administration for the Honors College at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He is the author of Apocalypse South: Judgment, Cataclysm, and Resistance in the Regional Imaginary (Ohio State University Press, 2012), and his other published works have engaged graphic novels, detective fiction and The Big Lebowski. His current research projects include inquiry into wildness, wonder and narrative form, and—as is the case in this collection—considerations of the relationships between shame and democratic norms in U.S. fiction. In 2021, he received George Mason University’s Teaching Excellence Award with special recognition for dedication to high impact learning. Invite This program is appropriate for ages 16+.
