In a reimagining of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the story this time is written from the perspective of Jim (who prefers to be called James), the enslaved man who travels with Huck. Everett portrays James as intelligent, literate, and compassionate, and when he hears that he is to be sold and forever separated from his family, he runs away until he can create a plan. When Huck fakes his own death to escape his violent father, James and Huck journey by raft down the Mississippi River in search of freedom.
