Travels with the Muse is a journey into the creative life, told through travels to places where art and spirit meet. From the luminous interior of Sagrada Família to the rhythms of the Mississippi Blues Trail, from quilting traditions in Nebraska to the turning dance of the whirling dervishes in Türkiye, Lori Erickson explores what happens when we approach art not as experts, but as beginners willing to pay attention. Along the way, she sketches, listens, and learns from artists, musicians, and craftspeople, discovering that creativity has less to do with mastery than with attention. Blending travel writing, memoir, spirituality, and artistic exploration, Travels with the Muse reflects on the ways creative practice can deepen our experience of both place and the sacred. Lori Erickson is a travel writer who explores the sacred through place, story, and experience. Her work focuses on spiritual journeys—both to far-flung destinations and closer to home. She is the author of Every Step Is Home, The Soul of the Family Tree, Near the Exit, and Holy Rover. Her articles and essays have appeared in publications including the Los Angeles Times, National Geographic Traveler, Better Homes & Gardens, Travel + Leisure, and USA Today. Lori lives in Iowa City, Iowa, with her husband, Bob Sessions, who frequently serves as her photographer on assignments. Together, they have traveled to dozens of countries. They are parents to two adult sons. She holds a B.A. in English from Luther College and an M.A. in English from the University of Iowa, and is a member of the Society of American Travel Writers. Lori leads workshops and gives presentations on travel, spirituality, and writing at venues around the United States. In 2011, Lori was honored with a bronze marker on Iowa City’s Literary Walk, which recognizes authors who have lived and worked in the community. The walk was established after Iowa City was named a UNESCO City of Literature in 2008.
