About this event

Thoughtful conversations these days reveal great anxiety about the multiple crises we humans are facing. Our physical climate is deteriorating, as evidenced by the increasing frequency of flooding, wildfires, sea level rise, and species extinction. At the same time, we face political authoritarianism, economic instability and public health crises. Strength for What Lies Ahead: Restoring Balance in a Time of Crisis proposes practical strategies for dealing with challenging times, individual and social measures that can help us to navigate the dangerous waters ahead. The book offers tools to restore balance, create justice, find peace, and cultivate resilience. It contains chapters on Building Community, Ecological Action, Spiritual Practice, Emotional Resilience, Relief and Disaster Planning, Food Systems, Economic Democracy and Leadership. The book draws on the latest research and reporting on many crisis-related issues, and features interviews with a number of experts. Andy Douglas received an MFA in Nonfiction Writing from the University of Iowa, where he was the recipient of the Marcus Bach Fellowship for Writing about Religion and Culture. He has worked as a spiritual director and been active in community-building and creativity with the Community Sing movement and economic justice activism. He also volunteered in a prison choir for seven years, which informed his second book Redemption Songs. He lives in Iowa City. This is his fourth book.
