Your Weekend Guide to Sitka

Sitka packs a remarkable cultural calendar into a Southeast Alaska island town reachable only by plane or ferry. The Sitka Summer Music Festival has brought world-class chamber musicians north every June since the 1970s, performing against floor-to-ceiling views of Sitka Sound. The town's layered Tlingit and Russian heritage shows up in its events, from traditional dance performances to the Alaska Day Festival each October, which commemorates the 1867 transfer ceremony that happened here. Cruise season brings a summer surge of visitors, but the locals-first arts scene — concerts, theater, and community festivals — runs all year.
