Unfinished Business: The Importance of Lifelong Learning

Nelson Mandela said that education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. That statement can be perfectly demonstrated by one of the very first things the recently freed enslaved pursued during Reconstruction: Education. And this pursuit for those that are interested in progress, does not end when formalized schooling does. Using the backdrop of the Ethical Society of St. Louis's Social Justice Book club, Clark will discuss the importance of 'Lifelong Learning' to him. He will discuss what it means to him as well as some of the lessons he's learned. He will leave us all with a challenge to dive deeper into our own passions. Clark Hotaling currently serves as the ESSL's President of the Board of Trustees. After "dating" the Society for about a year, he became a member 3 years ago and has served on the Platform Speaker's Team, Executive Director Hiring Team, Stewardship Committee, and the Good Deed's Team. He's an active member of the Social Justice Book club. A Native of Yellow Springs Ohio, he and his wife Maryjane along with their 2 young sons relocated to the STL Area in 2000 to continue his 42+year career associated with Herman Miller (recently retired!!!!!). He's active with his passion of preserving, restoring, and enhancing Greenwood Cemetery in North County, Churches Together for Justice's affordable housing initiative, Webster Groves City Government, and teaching in a local Freedom School. He enjoys reading (LEARNING), walking, hiking, the outdoors, and traveling. This Platform will feature music from The Ethical Band, the house band at the Ethical Society of St. Louis. It is composed of and led by members who are musicians of all kinds, ages, and skill levels. Whether you are a trained player, beginner, or just want to shake a tambourine, The Ethical Band is a great way to both dip your toes into performing and become more involved in our Humanist community.
