He is the son of the god Cian who was of the Tuatha Dé Danann, and the princess Ethniu who was of the Fomorian. Lugh's grandfather, the Fomorian king Balor, heard a prophecy that his grandson would kill him and so he locked Lugh's mother up in a tower. Balor later stole Cian's sacred cow and so Cian snuck into Ethniu's tower and seduced her. When she bore three sons, Balor threw them all into the sea. Two of them drowned, but Lugh was rescued and raised by his foster father Mananan Mac Lir, the god of the sea. Lugh vowed to grow up and seek revenge. He became adept at many different skills, and trained as a spear warrior. When he became a man, he tricked the Fomorians into allowing him to enter their fortress where he killed his grandfather, the Fomorian king, Balor. This is why he is associated with skills, crafts and the arts, as well as with oaths, truth and the law. Lugh is the god of light, and his power from the sun goes into the grain as it ripens. It is then harvested and made into the first new bread of the season. This time of the year was also known as laef-masse or loaf-mass, which is now called lammas. Lammas is traditionally a festival celebrating the first harvest, the fruits of our labours, and seeing the desires that we had at the start of the year unfold. It's a time for bread-making and corn-dollies. Look around you and you will see various trees namely Rowan yeilding bright red berries and brambles showing ripening fruits alongwith apple and pear trees.
